Abe Invokes Act on Protection of Special Designated Secrets in Discussing Hostage Crisis

The Abe Administration has been reluctant to disclose information about the recent hostage crisis in Syria, claiming that such information falls under the scope of the Act on Protection of Special Designated Secrets that was put in place last December. The Administration claims that some countries and individuals gave information to the Japanese government regarding the hostage crisis under the obligation that the Japanese keep their sources and information secret. Some politicians and members of the media complain that this act is hindering investigation of the crisis.
