Guardian Reports Becky Scandal As Sexism
On February 8th, The Guardian reported the scandal over the infidelity of Becky with a married singer, Enon Kawatani, as clearly sexist.
The guardian reported that the professional sanctions, including losing all of her TV endorsements, as an extraordinarily harsh example of the treatment that female entertainers in Japan can expect to receive if they are found to have done anything which could tarnish their image.
Contrary to how the scandal has been depicted by Japanese media outlets, the article takes a very sympathetic position in support of Becky and other female Japanese entertainers like her who have seen their careers destroyed. Will this call for equality by The Guardian help turn the tide for Becky and cause the Japanese media to reexamine their treatment and expectations of female entertainers?
