Japanese Government Announces Japanese National Not Included in the Evacuee Camp in Iraq
On September 10th, 2017 Associated Press (AP) reported that a Japanese national is included among the 1300 family members of the Islamic State members who fled to the camp for internally displaced people in Northern Iraq. AP obtained this information from an Iraqi military official.
In the briefing by Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga on September 19th, 2017, a correspondent of Sankei Shimbun mentioned that he heard that the Iraqi government told the Japanese government that a Japanese national did not exist in the camp, and asked Suga if the Japanese government had a grasp of the situation.
In response to this, Suga stated that he confirmed this fact with the Iraqi government. According to the information that the Iraqi government shared with the Japanese government, there was no evidence that indicated that a Japanese national was included in the families of the combatants at this point.
