Jun Matsumoto’s Habit: Starting Day by Drinking Sayu
Sayu (白湯） is plain hot water and the custom of drinking it is becoming more widespread in Japanese showbiz as it has a positive effect on health and weight loss. Jun Matsumoto (34) is one of the Japanese entertainers who drink sayu.
He is a member of Arashi, one of the most popular boy bands in Japan. He is quite popular as an actor as well and stars in drama series and movies.
Asa Ichi (あさイチ) is a morning show that aired during 8:15 am to 9:54 am from Monday to Friday on NHK (Channel 1). On November 6th Thursday, 2014, Matsumoto appeared on this show as a guest to talk about Arashi’s 15th anniversary concert, ARASHI BLAST in Hawaii on September 19th and 20th and the documentary titled 嵐１５年目の告白Live & Document that was going to be aired on November 7th by NHK. At the end of the show, an anchor, Yumiko Udo, asked him if there was anything that he is consistently doing in the morning. He responded by saying that he drinks sayu in the morning. After getting up, he boils water and waits for it to cool down and drinks it as sayu.
Another anchor, Yoshihiko Inohara, asked him do you use a kettle? Matsumoto said, “I boil the water with a kettle and then if the water started to bubble, then I will take off the lid and let it bubble for three more minutes. Then I take it off the stove and I leave it for a while. When it cools down, I drink it while eating breakfast.”
Matsumoto started drinking sayu in the morning because his acquaintance with ayurvedic knowledge told him that it is good for his health.
According to Dr. Makoto Hasumura who practices western medicine integrated with ayurvedic philosophy, drinking sayu as the first thing in the morning makes your stomach and intestines warm and increases your metabolism. Another expert says that drinking sayu in the morning can help to relieve constipation. The doctor recommends that you drink a cup of sayu during each meal gradually little by little. This helps in digestion.
With regards to the amount of sayu recommended per day, it is 700 to 800 ml, which is equivalent to from 5 or 6 cups. If you drink more than recommended, you can potentially harm your health as drinking too much sayu can wash away the necessary nutrients from your body.
