Attack on Titan is a dark, fantasy comic about one human’s challenge fighting giants who have so much stronger than humans. The story begins 100 years ago after an attack by giants who suddenly appear on Earth. At that point, most humans had been eaten by the giants. The humans who survived built several tall walls to protect themselves from the giants. Inside these walls, humans lived relatively stable lives for the next 100 years, until one day exceptionally large giants showed up and destroyed one of the walls. This led to a difficult war against the giants. The comic includes a lot of gruesome scenes, since the whole plotline revolves around the battles between humans and giants who eat humans.
The author, Hajime Isayama was inspired to write Attack on Titan because he wanted to depict tales of humans who are put in extreme situations. In 2009, the comic began regular publication in a comic magazine called Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Seventeen volumes of illustrated graphic novels have been published so far, and volume 18 will come out on December 9, 2015. The comic has become very popular, and it is one of the bestselling comics in Japan. According to Oricon, total sales of the series comic between November 18, 2013 and November 16, 2 014 were 11,728,000 copies, second only to ONE PIECE. (ONE PIECE sold 11,886,000) The comic has also been translated into several foreign languages, including English, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, French, Italian, German and Spanish. The comic has many fans outside of Japan.
In 2013, the comic was adapted into an animation TV program, whose first season aired between April and September. The second season will air in 2016. In August 2015, a live action movie based on the comic was released. However, the movie was heavily criticised by the fans of the comic. They said that the movie’s plot differed significantly from the original story, that the graphics were not very good, and that the cast did not adequately match the characters in the comic.
