Given the Cold Shoulder
Several Japanese media outlets have reported that governor Onaga of Okinawa prefecture was treated coldly during his visit to the US from May 27 to June 4.
The word which the Japanese media is using to describe his treatment is “reigu”(冷遇), which means to treat someone coldly.
Asahi Digital, J-Cast News and Jiji.com have used this same word to describe Onaga’s treatment in the US. The cold behavior which they are referring to is, the unwavering stance of US officials on the construction of Henoko base, along with a general lack of US media coverage of US media coverage of Onaga’s visit.
During a press conference on June 3rd in Washington however, Onaga emphasized the positive aspects of his visit, and stated that he saw a silver lining in the clouds.
