High School Dance Club’s Video Becomes Popular on Youtube

The Tomioka Dance Club (TDC) promotional video was posted on Youtube on September 16th, 2017 and is becoming very popular among the Japanese public. The dance video obtained 2,643,438 views and ranked third place in the kyujyosho rankings on Youtube JP as of September 18th, 2017. (Kyujosho 急上昇 is a Japanese word that means sudden rise.)

The TDC is a dance club in Tomioka Prefectural High School which is located in Sakai city, Osaka. The TDC is a very competitive dance club that won the grand prizes in both 2015 and 2016 in a championship for high school dance clubs in Japan called “The Dance Stadium”. Media attention towards the TDC is high and they have been featured by various media outlets. The members of the TDC appeared in a TV commercial for Koshien, the championship for high school baseball clubs, which was aired this summer.

The TDC won the second place prize in this year’s “The Dance Stadium” held in Yokohama on August 17th performing a program featuring young women in the attire of the so-called bubble economy period, which spanned from the 1980’s to the 1990’s in Japan. This program was unique and funny, and became more popular among the Japanese public than the performance by Doshisha Kori High School that won the grand prize in the same match.  The costumes and performance were inspired by skits of a comedienne, Nora Hirano featuring a woman dressed in clothing popular in bubble era, and talks about topics that were popular during the bubble period humorously. Notably, the TDC won the grand prize performing the same act in the Dance Club Championship (DCC)  held in Tokyo on August 7th, 2017.

The program of the TDC in 2017 is called, “Juliana” which is the name of a disco club that existed in Tokyo from 1991 to 1994. The members of the TDC are dressed in jackets with big shoulder pads, a skirt, wear makeup, have thick eyebrows, and style their hair with a perm style called sauvage, which was popular in the bubble period. This is the fashion style that Hirano wears when she performs her skits. They danced to the song, “Dancing Hero” sung by Yoko Oginome released in 1986; the song is a cover of “Eat You Up” by Angie Gold in 1985. When Oginome covered the song in Japanese, the title was changed to “Dancing Hero”. The TDC members were not familiar with what it was like in the bubble period, so they learned about the era watching youtube videos. With regards to the costumes, it is said that they remade their grandmothers outfits. Some of the members carried replicas of the first cell phone type introduced to Japan, which were so much bigger than the cell phones today. They created this using styrofoam and black tape. Hirano uses this cellphone often during her skits. The PR video shot the TDC members walking out of their school campus and dance scene at the Club Piccadilly in Umeda, Osaka.
