Prime Minister “Ayb”
I have met a couple of Americans who refer to Japanese Prime Minister Abe as “ayb” instead of “ah-beh.” After I tell them the proper pronunciation of his name, they do not mispronounce it anymore. I think they say “ayb” because there is an English and American nickname, spelled Abe, which is short for Abraham. So, when a native English speakers see the name Abe, they think of “ayb” instead of “ah-beh.”
