The Aftermath of MP Miyazaki’s Resignation

In order to fill the vacancy of the third district of Kyoto in parliament, a special election will be held on April 24 of this year. Mainichi Shimbun reports that this is a competitive district, where the LDP and the Democratic Party of Japan (the biggest opposition party) are close in the polls. Even though Miyazaki ran on an LDP ticket for the previous two elections, his margin of victory was small: 200 votes in the 2012 election and 4,500 votes in the 2014 election. According to Mainichi Shimbun, Prime Minister Abe said in a meeting with his supporters on February 12 that women voters may defect from the LDP.
